Anne Arundel officials join push to bring The Sun under local ownership

The "Save Our Sun" campaign was started in April by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild and the NewsGuild-CWA when furloughs and pay cuts hit the newsroom this spring as the novel coronavirus impacted revenues at the state's largest daily paper. That setback occurred just after The Sun was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for local reporting based on its coverage of former Mayor Catherine Pugh and the Healthy Holly scandal.

Sun journalists are represented by the unions in their push to force a sale by Tribune Publishing to a local group that aspires to create a nonprofit news model. Jon Schleuss, president of the News Guild-CWA, with about 24,000 members, said the Sun's campaign is about the survival of local news.

"We don’t have to make wild sums of money, we just have to keep the doors open," Schleuss said, of potential local ownership under a nonprofit model. "If we can invest money back into it it will make journalism stronger."
