NewsGuild Sends Letters to Senate Leaders, Urging Support for SB 3718
As the NewsGuild continues to garner bipartisan Congressional support for S.B. 3718, NewsGuild President Jon Schleuss penned a letter to Senate Leaders Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to further underscore the need for local news in our communities:
"The news industry is facing an extinction-level event at a critical moment for our country, when we need to be informed about an unprecedented public health and economic crisis. Nearly 500 news organizations have already availed themselves of a financial lifeline in the form of federal loans from the Paycheck Protection Program. A bi-partisan bill sponsored by you and your colleagues would extend that aid to newsrooms owned by large media chains. We support The Local News and Emergency Information Act of 2020, S. 3718."
While the Senate negotiates another federal recovery package in the coming weeks, it is crucial that local newsrooms are supported in that effort.
Local newsrooms serve as watchdogs for our governments and platforms for civic engagement and discourse for voters. We hope leaders in the Senate will take action to keep communities informed and connected.
As noted in Politico Influence, the NewsGuild is proud to be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the National Association of Broadcasters and the News Media Alliance on this critical issue.
