Support journalists
Journalists, especially those covering local news, are essential workers who deserve our support, including their inclusion in future economic recovery bills now being considered by Congress. The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic collapse have devastated America’s already crippled local news industry, which has traditionally relied on advertising to survive.
We write as retired journalists who have worked for a variety of Northern California newspapers over the past 50 years, including the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner, Oakland Tribune, Davis Enterprise, Napa Register, Vallejo Times-Herald and the Daily Californian. Over the last 15 years, some 1,800 newspapers have gone out of business in the U.S., making it increasingly difficult for journalists to maintain even a modest income. Now more than ever, our citizenry needs professional journalists covering the news and separating fact from fiction at all levels of society, from Washington, D.C. to Alameda.
